Customer Bulletin: Xilinx Shows 1-5 Watt Power Savings Per FPGA in New Whitepaper, Webcast and RocketLabs
29 April 2005
Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX - News) today released a technology white paper on the increasingly acute inter- relationship between power and performance at the 90nm process technology node. A live webcast on the topic of power will be conducted on May 3, 2005, providing users with lab measurements of commonly used functions and power optimization design techniques. Designers of Virtex(TM)-4 FPGAs can derive 1 to 5 Watts lower power per FPGA than any competing 90nm FPGA shipping today.
The industry has crossed a critical inflection point at 90 nm, where performance competes with power and thermal budgets. The white paper discusses performance versus power consumption in 90 nm FPGAs and how Virtex-4 FPGAs provide the industry's highest performance and lowest power consumption. Benefits of low power consumption are outlined and various components of power consumption at system and component level are discussed with specific emphasis on challenges 90nm vendors need to overcome. Unique Virtex-4 FPGA power-saving technologies are described including triple-oxide technology and transistor design techniques to reduce static and dynamic power.
The white paper also provides power consumption estimates and measurements for Virtex-4 and competing 90nm FPGAs covering static and dynamic power for various design examples covering logic, memory, I/O, DSP, and processing. Tips to evaluate FPGA power within the restrictions of power budget are provided. In particular, customers will learn how to save anywhere from 1 to 5 Watts in power for their design.
