Engelhard Commercializes New Technology for Light-Duty, Diesel-Emission Control
27 April 2005
Engelhard Corporation (NYSE: EC - News) is launching innovative catalyst technology that meets stringent, new Euro IV emission regulations and also reduces precious-metal costs for automakers. The new technology, which Engelhard has been developing for the past several years, will go into serial production starting next month on new model platforms from two major European carmakers.
Each of these vehicles will be equipped with a three-catalyst system to achieve regulatory compliance. The Engelhard platinum/palladium diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) technology enables palladium to be substituted for one-third of the platinum on one of those catalysts. That results in significant precious metal cost savings while meeting the high temperature durability required in diesel-emission-control applications.
Emissions from diesel engines are of increasing concern to government regulators around the world. Euro IV regulations require carmakers to significantly reduce emissions of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), which pollute the air and are linked to respiratory diseases.
"Once again, we've leveraged our expertise in emission-control technology to provide the most cost-effective solutions for the market," said Dave Kuzy, commercial manager for environmental technologies at Engelhard. "Already a leader in soot filter technology, commercialization of this latest advance gives Engelhard a leadership position in DOC technology as well."
Engelhard continues to work on extending application of platinum/palladium technologies to other diesel-emission-control applications.
