Zetera's New Network Storage Technology Paves the Way for Cost-Effective, Protected Storage for Corporate

26 April 2005

Zetera Corp., the developer of breakthrough network storage technology, today announced the availability of a new whitepaper authored by IDC titled, "A New Disruptive IP Storage Technology Paves the Way for Advanced, Cost-Effective, and Protected Storage for Corporate and Consumer Networks." The paper examines the potential for Zetera's patent-pending technology to be a disruptive solution within the network storage industry. According to IDC, this potential is due to the technology's ability to match or exceed the capabilities of existing storage standards at a lower cost.

The shifting nature of business needs and the advent of the networked home are changing the ways companies and consumers use storage. For businesses, the widespread use of local networks and advanced applications, the explosion in Internet traffic and large e-mail attachments, and the growing use of multimedia sound and imagery to support Web sites, business applications and regulatory mandates requires bigger and better storage systems. IT managers need storage solutions that meet these new requirements and scale to meet tomorrow's anticipated and unanticipated demands.

On the consumer side, an explosion in the range and type of home networking and personal entertainment devices such as MP3 players, PVRs, and game systems require expanded levels of storage. IDC contends that today, "it is not hard to find households that have almost a terabyte of storage installed across various devices." Consumers concerned with storing and protecting precious memories (family photos and videos) along with other digital possessions need storage solutions that add capacity that is self-configuring and accessible by all systems, allocate capacity for individual applications, and enable more robust data protection.

Zetera has introduced a new storage networking architecture that improves on what IDC considers to be the four fundamental factors that drive the success of a network storage system -- cost, scalability, performance and reliability. Zetera network storage uses IP as the storage fabric, delivering network storage without bottlenecks and at the lowest cost. The technology uses IP multicast to achieve sharing, spanning and RAID without specialized hardware while scaling linearly without the need for additional controllers/aggregators.

"Zetera's approach isn't 'storage over IP' as discussed by many companies in the storage industry," explained Dave Reinsel, program director of storage research for IDC and author of the Zetera whitepaper. "In contrast, rather than using IP as an extension cord between clients and storage devices, Zetera uses IP as the storage paradigm itself."

The whitepaper examines in detail how Zetera's approach to IP storage addresses the four critical storage solution criteria more effectively than many existing network storage solutions. "This positive analysis by such a widely respected authority as IDC validates our mission to change the storage industry," said Chuck Cortright, president and CEO of Zetera.

According to IDC, there are many market opportunities for Zetera's storage technology. For businesses of all sizes, Zetera offers an alternative to costly storage solutions with a low-cost, easy-to-deploy, and easy-to-manage integrated storage system. On the home networking side, Zetera's use of IP, a technology that is already supported and used by most consumer electronic devices, unobtrusively ties these standalone islands of storage together in a way that provides both protection and sharing of data.

"The changing information needs of businesses and the advent of the networked home with its growing need for storage capacity and data protection will dramatically change the ways companies and consumers buy and use storage in the coming years," the whitepaper reports. "Zetera, with its fully IP-based storage solution, is in a strong position to capitalize on these changes and become a disruptive technology in the network storage market."

The whitepaper also points out that Zetera's focused approach to bringing its technology to market increases its chances of success. Zetera is marketing its technology initially within the SMB market where there is little conflict with established high-end storage systems and within consumer market where there is an increasing need for inexpensive, easy-to-deploy protected storage.

"We offer computer and consumer electronics manufacturers an extraordinary opportunity to use Zetera's technology to build products that perform better and cost less," added Cortright. NETGEARĀ® Inc., StorCaseĀ®, and Bell Microproducts have all announced Zetera-based network storage products targeted to the consumer and SMB markets that are slated to ship in the summer of 2005.
